How to turn Amplitude into a PQL engine (3 plays)

Where Teams Go Wrong
The failure modes are predictable. Watch for these.
- Skipping the tracking plan. Teams instrument fast, ship features faster, and a year in the event names drift. Every downstream cohort gets noisier. Pair Amplitude Data with code review and the plan stays clean.
- Treating cohorts as static lists. A PQL cohort defined six months ago is not the same cohort today. Audiences need to be re-evaluated quarterly, especially after major product changes.
- Running experiments without exposure events. The flag fires, the variant ships, but the analytics doesn't know who saw what. Every measurement is wrong. Wire exposure events on day one or skip the experiment.
- Forgetting identity resolution. Anonymous web behaviour and authenticated product behaviour need to stitch together cleanly. If they don't, the funnel from acquisition to activation is fiction.
- Leaving the data inside Amplitude. Dashboards are not actions. Every cohort that matters should fire something downstream: a CRM update, a lifecycle message, a Slack alert, an ad audience refresh.

What Changes in Six Months
When the build lands, the meeting culture shifts. Product reviews start with a cohort, not a hypothesis. Marketing campaigns target behavioural segments that match how the product is actually used. Sales gets a daily list of accounts that crossed a PQL threshold, with the behavioural story attached. CS sees churn risk thirty days earlier and reaches out with context. Leadership stops asking for ad-hoc data pulls because the weekly Slack digest already has the answer.

How Amplitude Stacks Up Against the Alternatives
